Breitenbach am Herzberg (dpa/lhe) – After a break due to the pandemic, the Herzberg Festival in East Hesse is back on stage. The organizers of the hippie festival are expecting a total of 10,500 visitors at Herzberg Castle in Breitenbach. This time they seem to be lucky with the weather, said Festival Managing Director Gunther Lorz. However, open fire is prohibited because of the risk of forest fires. The hippie festival started on Thursday and will continue until Sunday. The program includes performances by the bands New Model Army and Groundation.
“The Herzberg spirit was palpable from the first moment, it was a really nice feeling,” said Lorz, referring to the mandatory break of the event. The festival was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona pandemic.
The hippie festival is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. The music festival was first celebrated in 1968, making it a year older than the legendary Woodstock Festival held in 1969, which is considered the musical highlight of the US hippie movement.
