Mannheim (dpa/lsw) – The city of Mannheim will soon be able to make up for a faux pas with the new signage for a bridge in honor of ex-Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. A sign presented in the middle of the month incorrectly stated 1915 as the year of birth. The SPD politician was born in 1918. The new signs for both driveways are ready, a spokesman for the city said on Friday. It is not yet clear when they will be installed next week. The internet portal “Mannheim24” had previously reported about it.

The bridge was only officially named Helmut Schmidt Bridge on July 13 and a first sign was installed and unveiled that day. The city was made aware of the error in the evening.

The municipal council had already decided in 2020 to name the bridge and the southern bypass as Helmut-Kohl-Straße. Because of the corona pandemic, the official act only followed now.
