Jena/Erfurt (dpa/th) – According to an MDR report, the infection doctor Mathias Pletz from the Jena University Hospital does not assume that the hospitals will be overloaded with corona patients for the coming winter. In the meantime, everyone has either received a vaccination or gone through an infection, the doctor told MDR Thuringia on Friday. Studies have shown that the so-called T-cell immunity protects against severe disease progression. T cells, a subset of white blood cells, are part of the body’s defense against the coronavirus.

Pletz, who heads the Institute for Infectious Medicine and Hospital Hygiene at the Jena Clinic and is a member of the Corona Advisory Board of the state government, expects many slightly ill corona infected people in autumn and winter. At the same time, he fears that the number of people with long-term consequences of Covid 19 disease will increase. According to him, data shows that people who experience a corona infection more often have a higher risk of long covid. A corona vaccination can reduce this risk.
