Mannheim (dpa/lsw) – SV Waldhof Mannheim started the new season of the 3rd football league with a win. The fifth in the table last season defeated Viktoria Köln 3-1 (0-0) with two goals shortly before the end on Saturday. The victory for the ambitious Mannheimer in front of 7868 spectators in the Carl Benz Stadium was deserved.
After a goalless first half, in which the team of new coach Christian Neidhart committed but acted without luck in front of the goal, Baris Ekincier gave the Waldhöfer the lead in the 64th minute. Surprisingly, the Rhinelanders equalized after a corner in the 73rd minute through Youssef Amyn. After that, there were many indications of a draw before Gerrit Gohlke scored from a close range to make it 2-1 (86′). Dominik Kother scored Mannheim’s third goal in injury time after a counterattack.
