Dogs are very greedy and you may be tempted to give them treats. Nothing is more difficult than resisting the imploring gaze of your four-legged friend while you are enjoying a square of chocolate. But this candy has a bad reputation, chocolate seems to be one of the prohibited foods in the canine diet. Why, and can we replace this sweetness with another?

Chocolate is not good for our pets for a simple and good reason: cocoa contains theobromine, a substance perfectly assimilable by humans but not by dogs, and other potentially toxic elements. The higher the cocoa percentage, the higher the danger. It is poisonous to the animal’s body because of the cumulative effects, giving small amounts of chocolate regularly will result in the same devastating effect.

Don’t have the heart to deprive your dog of a treat? So buy him suitable delicacies. A chew bone, a dog biscuit or even a piece of cheese should please him just as much, without adversely affecting his body.
