Menges (dpa/lsw) – The cause of the crash of a small helicopter-like gyrocopter in a field next to an airfield in Menges is unclear. The police could not provide any information on Wednesday. The 60-year-old pilot died in the crash on Tuesday evening. The so-called autogyro fell from around 150 meters to the ground during an unsuccessful landing approach.
Only the 60-year-old was in the machine that crashed about 250 meters from the airfield. The fire brigade flew the vicinity of the scene of the accident using a drone, as it was initially unclear whether there might have been another person on board.
The Friedrichshafen criminal police department took over the investigations, which are being conducted with the Federal Office for Aircraft Accident Investigation. According to current knowledge, the pilot had started in Hildesheim and after a stopover in Giebelstadt he was on his way to the destination airport in quantities.
