A forest fire in the Saxon Switzerland National Park presents the fire brigade with a challenge: because the area around the famous Bastei Bridge is difficult to access, extinguishing the fire is difficult. All fire brigades in the area are already on duty.
A forest fire broke out in the Saxon Switzerland National Park. It burns in rough terrain near the famous Bastei Bridge, said a spokesman for the rescue control center in Dresden. All fire departments in the area are deployed. About 100 comrades tried to get the fire under control, it is said. The fire was reported during the night.
According to Thomas Kunz, spokesman for the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district, the fire has spread to an area of ??2,500 square meters. The extinguishing work would be made more difficult mainly by the fact that the site was difficult to access for the emergency services, Kunz explained to the newspaper “Freie Presse”. That is why the high-altitude rescue service is currently being used.
The Bastei is a rock formation with a viewing platform on the right bank of the Elbe. It is a popular tourist destination in Saxon Switzerland. Due to the fire, it is currently not accessible.
