The English women’s soccer team is in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, and how. The Brits trumped Norway and scored goal after goal. In the end, a new record was set at 8:0. The DFB women watched better, they could be opponents of the goal-hungry opponents in the quarter-finals.

With the highest victory in the history of the European Championship, England’s footballers stormed into the quarter-finals early. The Lionesses of national coach Sarina Wiegman outclassed former world champions Norway 8-0 (6-0) and underpinned their title ambitions impressively. On Friday, the hosts can crown the strong group stage against outsiders Northern Ireland.

In the quarter-finals, England is a possible opponent of the German team – provided they finish Group B in second place. The duel of the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) against Spain on Tuesday (9 p.m.) is of great importance.

England didn’t give Norway a chance on Monday. Georgia Stanway (12th) with a converted penalty kick, Lauren Hemp (16th, according to video evidence), Ellen White (29th, 41st) and Beth Mead (34th, 38th) provided clear conditions before the break. For comparison: The highest European Championship victory to date was England 6-0 against Scotland in 2017, five years later Alessia Russo (66th) and Mead (81st) shot out the record result in the second round.

Austria benefited from the clear English victory, moving up to second place in the group. The team of national coach Irene Fuhrmann had previously prevailed 2-0 (1-0) against the European Championship debutants Northern Ireland and is now ahead of Norway because of the better goal difference. On Friday (9 p.m.) the two teams will duel for the second quarter-final ticket.

Katharina Schiechtl (19th), who plays for Werder Bremen, gave the favored Austrians the lead. Shortly before the end, Katharina Naschenweng (88th), who is active at Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim, increased after a strong solo.
