Freiberg (dpa / sn) – The non-party Dirk Neubauer has wrested the district of Central Saxony from the CDU. On Sunday, 55.6 percent of voters voted for the previous mayor of Augustusburg. AfD man Rolf Weigand came in second (24.1 percent) and CDU candidate Sven Liebhauser in third place (20.4), as the State Office for Statistics informed about the preliminary result. Neubauer’s candidacy had been supported by the SPD, the Left and the Greens.
A total of more than 247,000 people in the district of Mittelsachsen were called upon to elect a new district administrator. The turnout on Sunday was 36.6 percent. Because no candidate had achieved more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round in mid-June, a second ballot was necessary. A simple majority would have sufficed.
