The public service in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also employs people who are classified as extremists by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and who want to eliminate the free-democratic basic order. The cases are being reviewed, it said.

Schwerin (dpa / mv) – According to the findings of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, 23 right-wing and two left-wing extremists are employed in the public service in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Four of the right-wing extremists work in local government, two in teaching professions, one in a subordinate state authority and 16 in the state’s security authorities. This was announced by the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin at the request of the German Press Agency. In addition, two left-wing extremists are employed in the public service in MV, as the ministry responded to a small request from the AfD parliamentary group.

The Ministry of the Interior explained that the right-wing extremists in the police generally became known in the course of the investigation into the prepper group “Nordkreuz”. Among other things, the members had prepared themselves for a feared collapse of public order with shooting training. In the course of the investigation, chats with right-wing extremist content became known – police officers were also among the participants.

Since the Office for the Protection of the Constitution does not have knowledge of the professional activities of every recorded extremist, the number of unreported cases may be higher, the ministry said. In addition, data records would have to be regularly removed from the stocks, taking into account statutory storage and deletion periods. Therefore, the numbers represent a snapshot.

According to a ministry spokeswoman, the legal hurdles to removing an employee from the state service are very high. “Every case is therefore meticulously processed,” she assured. Removal from service is the most severe disciplinary measure.
