Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – The digitization ministers of the federal states have warned the federal government against massive cuts in funds for broadband expansion. After a two-day meeting in Heidelberg and Walldorf, the Baden-Württemberg department head Thomas Strobl (CDU) said on Friday in Stuttgart: “Financial cuts by the federal government at the expense of the digital infrastructure would be counterproductive and are absolutely unacceptable for the federal states and municipalities.” So far, the federal government had originally made 12 billion euros available for its 2018 funding program. From the point of view of the federal states, the volume should be maintained.

In this context, a spokeswoman for Strobl referred to the federal government’s considerations of capping funding at EUR 1 billion per year for all federal states in the future. The need for federal funds in the next two years in the southwest will be in the order of 500 million euros per year.
