Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – At the end of 2021, a total of 6662 prostitutes were officially registered in North Rhine-Westphalia. That was 139 more than at the end of 2020, as the State Statistics Office (IT.NRW) announced on Friday. The number of reported prostitutes at the end of 2021 was almost a third (-29.7 percent) lower than before the start of the corona pandemic at the end of 2019 (then: 9472).
At 39.8 percent, most of the reported prostitutes had Romanian citizenship at the end of 2021. 20.4 percent were German. The third most common prostitutes were Bulgarian nationals (12.9 percent). The majority of the registered prostitutes (79.6 percent) were between 21 and 45 years old. 16.7 percent were 45 years or older and another 3.7 percent were 18 to 20 years old. Since 2017, prostitutes have had to register. There was no information on the number of unregistered prostitutes.
