Warnemünde will be the venue of the famous sailing competition for the 84th time. But visitors to the Baltic Sea resort can expect much more.

Warnemünde (dpa/mv) – After two challenging Corona years, sport, culture and fun are again at the top of the program for Warnemünde Week, which takes place from July 2nd to 10th. “A season without this event is unimaginable,” said Rostock’s acting mayor Chris von Wrycz Rekowski (SPD) in advance.

Because of the corona pandemic, the 2020 sailing event had to be canceled; last year it could only take place with a scaled-down program. The stage program is not yet as varied as in 2019, but the promenades on the promenade and on the Alter Strom are the same size, the organizers said. Before the pandemic, up to 700,000 visitors came in good weather.

This year, visitors should once again be able to look forward to one of the largest summer festivals in the region. The traditional start is the colorful “Niege Ümgang” parade with around 2000 participants, which is organized by many volunteers and associations. Von Wrycz Rekowski was impressed by the voluntary commitment of the helpers. “Many have been sacrificing their free time for weeks and months to make the Warnemünde Week a success.”

As part of the colorful cultural program, a wide variety of concerts will be played and, among other things, cinema films will be shown on the middle pier, for which the guests could vote in advance. The superhero film “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, the documentary “Our Oceans” and the classic “Dirty Dancing” will be presented.

According to the organizer, around 450 boats from 20 countries are expected for the actual highlight of the Warnemünde Week, the sailing competition. There is also a beach handball tournament. After a forced two-year break, around 30 teams with almost 400 players will compete against each other in the SportBeachArena on the first weekend. The crowning glory of the nine-day event is the dragon boat festival on the southern part of the Alter Strom, which can also take place again for the first time since 2019.
