Neustrelitz (dpa/mv) – The 2022 open-air theater season in Neustrelitz on the Mecklenburg Lake District starts today with the opera classic “Carmen” by Georges Bizet. Directed by Frenchman Marc Adam. According to the Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz, the production will be based heavily on the novella “Carmen” by the French writer Prosper Mérimée, on which the Bizet opera is based. This novel about the unfortunate love of a soldier for a very attractive woman – Carmen – is school material in France.
The mezzo-soprano Jana Markovic and the tenor Bernd Könnes can be seen in the leading roles. 13 performances are planned until July 23. The open-air performance venue has around 1,300 seats. The festival at the Neustrelitz Castle Gardens can already look back on more than 20 years of tradition. Before the Corona pandemic, up to 14,000 spectators came each open-air season.
On Saturday, the medieval Müritz saga starts with the play “Des Teufel’s henchmen” on the lake district. The organizers had paused for two years because of the corona pandemic.
