US Congresswoman Liz Cheney has called ex-President Donald Trump “a domestic threat” the country has never faced before. This is reported, among other things, by the “New York Times”. Cheney, a Republican like Trump, is vice chair of the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 storming of the US Capitol in Washington.
Trump is trying to “undo the foundations of our constitutional republic,” Cheney said in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. He had “gone to war with the rule of law”. The Wyoming MP has been one of Trump’s loudest critics within the party since Trump’s 2020 election defeat. Her father is former US Vice President Dick Cheney.
The 55-year-old also criticized her own party. Trump is “supported by Republican leaders and elected officials who have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.” She stressed, “Even after everything we’ve seen, they support his lies.” The former president goes on to claim that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. At that time he was defeated by current President Joe Biden.
Republicans would have to make a decision, said Cheney: “You couldn’t be loyal to Donald Trump and the Constitution at the same time.” The Republican has not yet ruled out running for the 2024 presidential election. Because of her criticism of Trump, however, she is isolated in large parts of her party, last year the Republicans ousted her from the group leadership in the House of Representatives. It is likely that Trump will run for office in 2024, even if he has not yet publicly committed himself.
The parliamentary committee of inquiry into the storming of the Capitol held Trump responsible for the events of January 6, 2020.
