Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) – In order to achieve the self-imposed climate goals, Minister Winfried Hermann believes that the transport sector must now become significantly and quickly greener. In a ten-point paper available to the dpa, Hermann (Greens) is pushing for an expansion of local transport and the charging station infrastructure for electric cars. The minister also wants more cycle paths, a truck toll on state and municipal roads and so-called climate mobility plans for all municipalities.

A particularly sensitive suggestion: Hermanns declares war on free parking spaces in the cities in the south-west. “Where free parking spaces take up most of the space, no bicycle parking facilities, footpaths or space for outdoor catering can be created,” says the paper. In his view, parking should be relocated from public spaces to multi-storey car parks, garages and neighborhood garages. Free parking must become the exception rather than the rule. “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” had initially reported on it.

In the transport sector, Baden-Württemberg wants to reduce emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. According to the Ministry of Transport, greenhouse gas emissions from transport correspond to around a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. In the Corona year 2020, CO2 emissions in this area fell by eleven percent compared to the previous year. According to calculations by the State Institute for the Environment, they rose again by two percent in 2021, but are still well below the level before the pandemic.
