Kyiv has rarely been the target of Russian attacks in recent weeks. Now the historic district in the center of the Ukrainian capital has been hit by a rocket. According to Mayor Klitschko, a residential complex is being evacuated.
The Ukrainian capital Kyiv has been rocked by several explosions. According to AFP journalists, a residential complex in the city center was hit and fire broke out. Half an hour earlier, the city’s air raid sirens had sounded the alarm. Information on possible victims was initially not available.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram that there had been several explosions in the Shevchenkivsky district. Rescue workers and rescuers are on site. In two houses residents are rescued and evacuated. The historic district in central Kyiv is home to a number of universities, restaurants and art galleries. Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, wrote that eyewitnesses reported seeing rockets. Already on Saturday there had been a rocket attack on the western Ukrainian city of Sarny, in which at least three people were killed, according to the authorities.
The Ukrainian capital has rarely been the target of Russian attacks in recent weeks, and the Russian military is currently concentrating its attacks primarily on the east of the country. Kyiv was last shelled in early June. While the Ukrainian side spoke of damaged railway infrastructure, Moscow reported the targeted destruction of tanks freshly delivered from abroad.
