A source close to the Defense Ministry confirmed the arrest of General Sergei Surovikin, deputy commander of the joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine.
General Surovikin – very close to Wagner’s boss Evgeny Prigozhin – was arrested in connection with the Wagner riot on Saturday. As published by The Moscow Times based on two sources close to the Ministry of Defense.
The first rumors about the arrest of Surovikin were previously published by the military blogger Vladimir Romanov. According to this analyst, the general was arrested on June 25, one day after the attempted military coup.
Sources in this outlet confirm that Surovikin chose Prigozhin’s side during the rebellion.
The Ministry of Defense has not officially commented on this information.
Sergei Surovikin has not been seen since he recorded a video rejecting the riot in the early hours of Saturday morning when the riot started. Experts consulted by the New York Times called the video of him “hostage-style.”
“Surovikin has not been in contact with his family for three days. His guards are not responding either,” confirmed Russian journalist and presenter Alexei Venediktov.
