Salzburg (dpa / lby) – Day trippers and holidaymakers can continue to travel by bus and train free of charge on Fridays in the state of Salzburg. The Austrian state has extended the “Gasoline Free Days” campaign that has been running since the beginning of April until September 9th, the state administration announced on Tuesday. Since the start of the campaign, more than 200,000 passengers have also used buses and trains, said Transport Councilor Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP). “We see people who have never traveled a certain route by bus or train before.” First, the Austrian press agency APA reported.
The campaign applies not only to local public transport in the state of Salzburg, but also to long-distance trains such as Railjet and ICE. Without the extension, the offer would have expired on June 24. According to estimates by the state of Salzburg, the continuation until September 9th will cost up to 1.5 million euros. The funds for this come from the pot for the climate ticket and come from the Austrian federal government.
