Rostock (dpa / mv) – A fire has severely damaged the so-called willow dome in Rostock’s IGA Park. As the police announced on Sunday, the damage is estimated at more than 100,000 euros. According to the first information, the police assume that the fire was deliberately set. Witnesses reported that two youthful people left the willow cathedral right before the fire broke out on Sunday afternoon.

The Willow Cathedral is a prayer room made of woven willow branches. The IGA Park describes it on its website as the “green church on the Baltic Sea”. With a length of more than 52 meters and a dome height of 14 meters, the Willow Cathedral is “the largest living structure in the world.” According to the park, it was created by the architect Marcel Kalberer, his architectural group “Gentle Structures” and more than 600 volunteers from 13 nations.
