Darmstadt (dpa/lhe) – The small house in the Darmstadt State Theater can only start operating again with renewed stage technology in the 2024/2025 season. The original plan was for the work to be completed by the end of 2023. On Wednesday, the state office for construction and real estate in Hesse, which is responsible for the project, cited delivery problems and high utilization of the craft businesses as the reasons for the delay. “The war in Ukraine has made the situation on the building materials market even worse,” said director Thomas Platte.

The State Theater now wants to find alternative venues for another season. “That’s bad news. But we’ve been practicing for two years in the pandemic how to make the best of difficult situations,” said director Karsten Wiegand. The costs for the new stage technology were estimated at 51 million euros last year. The Staatstheater Darmstadt is a multi-genre house with opera, dance, drama and concerts.
