We all know about the many exchanges the Bacelonnettes had in Mexico, but Mexico was not the only country that attracted the Ubaye natives.

Friday, June 3rd, at the media library, was the opening of an exhibit devoted to East and North Africa. It was curated by Sophie VaginayRicourt (mayor), Florence Allemandi (assistant for culture), Myriam Lébre (director of the media library) and Helene Hops (director of the museum). Photographs from the period were mostly displayed. The first was the Maure family, father-son who settled in Biskra (Algeria), in 1840s. Marius, his son, had even built a studio there. There are many pictures. His film was filled with stunning scenes of Saharan life. This collection also includes photos taken in the same area by Jean Caire (1855-1935), as well as drawings and images brought back by Emile Chabrand (global-trotting naturalist).

The exhibit runs through July 31.
