Munich (dpa / lby) – The number of organ donations in Bavaria has decreased slightly in the current year. As the German Foundation for Organ Transplantation (DSO) reported at the request of the German Press Agency, organs were removed from 40 people in Bavaria from January up to and including April. A total of 110 organs were donated last year, 21 fewer than in 2020.

According to the Ministry of Health, which is based on figures from the Eurotrans Foundation, there has been a negative trend in the number of transplants in Bavaria for years. In 2021, 464 transplants were performed – three years earlier it was 595.

At the same time, however, the number of those who have to wait for a transplant has also fallen. “Currently around 1100 people in Bavaria are still waiting for a vital donor organ,” said the Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) on the occasion of the “Organ Donation Day” this Saturday. In 2017 there were still 1,473. It is therefore important that even more people opt for an organ donation card.
