Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – In October 2021, 26,635 young people in North Rhine-Westphalia were in school training for a health profession. As reported by the State Statistical Office (IT.NRW) on Thursday, almost three quarters (72.9 percent) of these trainees were female. At that time, 5,905 people were completing their first year of training, 67.1 percent of whom were young women, the statisticians determined.

Almost 40 percent of those who started training in the healthcare professions had a high school diploma, 28.1 percent had a high school diploma, and 11.2 percent had successfully completed secondary school. 19.6 percent had previously acquired the advanced technical college entrance qualification, 1.3 percent had other school education.

According to the statistics office, the largest proportion of high school graduates, at 82.6 percent, were beginners in midwifery and obstetric nurse training. This was followed by medical-technical laboratory assistants (72.1 percent) and speech therapy (67.9 percent).
