This may sound surprising to some, but scientists from Pennsylvania State University looked into whether the trait could have an impact on behavior during the SARS/CoV-2 pandemic. What is the reason? The authors reply that this personality trait was discovered at a time when people were encouraged to get vaccinated or wear masks to protect themselves.

Be different from everyone else

The researchers collected data from 1,100 adults in the United States to conduct their study. They also asked questions about vaccinations and wearing masks. They then assessed each participant’s level of narcissism.

Narcissists, regardless of their vulnerability or grandiosity, were more likely to refuse barrier gestures. The vulnerable narcissists were more sensitive to the gaze and more willing to wear a mask or receive vaccinations if they feel judged.

The authors conclude that if you want to persuade a grandiose narcissist into wearing a mask, you should make it cool. For those too sensitive to judgment, you can explain that not respecting barrier gestures is socially acceptable.
