Mannheim (dpa / lsw) – Almost 1000 people left their homes on Tuesday because of a dud in Mannheim’s Oststadt. The reason was the planned defusing of a 250-kilogram bomb from World War II. It was found on Tuesday during construction work on the banks of the Neckar and was supposed to be blown up that afternoon. All buildings within a radius of 500 meters from the site were affected by the evacuation.

For the duration of the defusing, a care room was set up in a school for residents who could not stay with relatives, friends or elsewhere. Patients who were bedridden received free ambulance transport.
