Laage (dpa/mv) – The Berlin space research company PTS will soon be settling at Rostock-Laage Airport. The airport is thus taking the next step in the direction of further development into a spaceport, the Zeitfracht Group announced on Tuesday. A space lab is to be set up with around a dozen scientists, in which companies such as PTS (Planetary Transportation Systems) can test lunar vehicles, spaceships or technologies for space. The facility should be open to other companies and attract researchers to Laage.
At the end of 2021, the Zeitfracht Group took over the civil part of the airport from the previous municipal users in order to further develop it as an additional logistics location. One of the plans is the construction of a logistics center in which air freight and road transport can be closely interlinked. The expansion of the airport into a Spacetec research facility is a central element in the future strategy. The Air Force remains the owner of the airport.
“For us, the construction of the Rostock Laage spaceport is a unique opportunity with a lot of potential for the future,” said PTS Managing Director André Radloff. PTS will benefit from the proximity to the universities of Rostock and Greifswald. There is the opportunity for students and graduates to tackle practical tasks together with experienced scientists and engineers.
