Trafalgar shot on the eve Elizabeth II’s Jubilee. Australia’s new centre left Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appointed Tuesday his government, which includes an “Agent minister for the Republic”, in a country that is a monarchy according to its Constitution.
This symbolic move by Australia towards an end to the British monarchy is part of the preparations made in London for Queen Elizabeth II’s jubilee.
Matt Thistlethwaite (MP for Sydney) saw the award go to him along with others. Labor leaders had promised a referendum that would strip the Queen of England from her title of head of state in Australia. Anthony Albanese, a long-time Republican, did not repeat this promise during the campaign.
The Movement for the Australian Republic welcomed the appointment and campaigns for an Australian head-of-state. “We are on our way!” Peter FitzSimons, a prominent Republican, tweeted the following:
The writer stated that Australia now has a member in government dedicated to helping Australia become a republic and removing the Crown for the first time in its history.
Anthony Albanese used to call the country’s transition from Republican rule “inevitable” in the past.
A narrow majority (55%) of Australians opposed the transition to a republic in 1999. This was due to disagreements over how the Queen’s replacement would be elected. She would have been chosen by Parliament, and not universal suffrage.
