In the context of Frankfurt’s Europa League victory, Mayor Feldmann allowed himself several missteps. The SPD politician is now responding to calls for his resignation with an apology – and the promise of more public restraint.
The mayor of Frankfurt am Main, Peter Feldmann, who is under a lot of pressure because of various allegations, wants to remain in office. However, he wanted to do without representative public appointments until the end of the summer break, said the SPD politician. “I will not work less, but differently,” said Feldmann. After demands for his resignation from the SPD city association, the Frankfurt mayor offered his party to suspend membership.
“I would like to follow Boris Palmer’s example,” said Feldmann, referring to the mayor of Tübingen, who is also criticized within the party, and who will not be a member of the Greens until the end of 2023. Feldmann said that such a model would require a joint solution from himself and the SPD.
Feldmann had come under pressure in the past few days because of sexist statements to flight attendants on the flight to the Europa League final from Eintracht Frankfurt to Seville. A video had appeared in which the mayor spoke of flight attendants on the flight to the Europa League final from Eintracht Frankfurt to Seville, “who put me out of action hormonally at first”. He was also criticized for behaving smugly when welcoming the Frankfurt team after their success.
Feldmann repeated his apologies for the comments. “It doesn’t happen anymore,” he said. At the reception for the footballers, as a Eintracht fan, “the horses went through”. Feldmann said of a corruption case against him: “My goodwill cannot be bought, I am not corrupt”.
