The coexistence of car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians is one of the difficult problems for traffic planners. Perhaps the solution found in Rostock with the Lange Straße is a viable option.
Rostock (dpa/mv) – After years of discussions, Lange Straße in Rostock has now been declared a bicycle street. “Cycling determines the speed on the road,” said Environment and Transport Senator Holger Matthäus (Greens) on Monday. As before, cars, motorcycles and bicycles are allowed to drive a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour. The additional sign “Anlieger frei” regulates that only cars that visit an adjacent property or shop are allowed to enter. The test is initially limited to one year. Trams also run in the street.
The bicycle street in Langen Straße is an important milestone towards the bicycle city, said Matthäus. He announced the further introduction of Tempo 30 on important cycle routes where there are no safe offers for cyclists. In addition, more bicycle lanes would be set up. “Cycling should be safer and therefore more attractive in Rostock.” Safe cycling should also be made possible for children and senior citizens.
“I am pleased that we are now giving the go-ahead for the pilot project together with the initiatives and associations,” said Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen (independent). The aim is that at the end of the test, the people of Rostock get on their bikes more often and feel safer on the road.
