Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – President of the state parliament Muhterem Aras, in her own words, would rather cower in a prison cell than join the AfD. The Greens politicians recently expressed this preference in a conversation with students attending a high school in Stuttgart. AfD parliamentary group leader Bernd Gögel spoke on Monday of a derailment and abuse of office. “Apart from defaming our parliamentary group, this statement also publicly spits in the face of a large part of the electorate who voted for a politically legitimate party in the last election,” said Gögel. The voters would be “criminalized in a sweeping manner” by Aras. Aras defame the AfD and damage the party – and in front of students. Gögel said an apology was expected.
At the on-site visit on Friday last week, students asked her whether she would rather go to prison for a month or have a lifelong AfD membership. “That’s a really tough question,” Aras replied. But while prison would certainly be tough, she would prefer prison, she said. The sentence earned her a lot of applause from the students.
The state press office emphasized on Monday that Aras had been traveling as a member of parliament in her constituency and had not made the statements in her capacity as state parliament president.
