With the Sport True Wireless, Sennheiser is launching its first wireless earphones that are really suitable for sports. Your chances are good, because they are not only robust and cheap, but also sound excellent.
With the CX and CX Plus True Wireless, Sennheiser managed to launch wireless earphones last year that cost a lot less than their noble Momentum brothers, but sound just as good. What was missing until now was a version of the CX suitable for sports, which Sennheiser has now presented: the Sport True Wireless for around 130 euros.
Even if they don’t have the CX in their name, you can immediately see that the earphones are very close relatives. They are basically identical, the only obvious difference being interchangeable silicone fins that are designed to ensure a secure fit while jogging or working out.
This also works, in the right size the wings clamp so effectively under the inner fold of the auricle that the earphones always stay in place even with wild movements and strong vibrations. But they are still so comfortable that you can wear them for a few hours without any problems. They are protected against dust and water according to IP54 so that they can survive a strenuous operation or bad weather without damage.
The transport box, which is larger than that of the CX True Wireless, has also been given special sports equipment. It has an eyelet to which the supplied lanyard can be attached. In addition, the USB-C connection is protected by a silicone cap.
As with the CX, Sennheiser has saved on the extras. For example, there’s no wearing detection, which automatically pauses playback when an earbud is taken out. There is also no active noise cancellation (ANC), which is not absolutely necessary unless you are one of those people who like to jog through rush hour traffic in the city.
On the contrary: in addition to ordinary attachments, which offer very good passive insulation, Sennheiser supplies attachments with an open design as an alternative, which allow more outside noise to pass through, so that approaching vehicles, for example, can be noticed in good time. Conveniently, there are two separate basic settings for this in the associated app.
When it comes to sound, Sennheiser has made no compromises. Like the CX, the Sport True Wireless sound little different than the much more expensive True Wireless 2: They deliver rich bass, broad, well-defined mids and crystal-clear highs with lots of details. They open up a wide, airy stage that is rarely found in this price range.
The successful presentation is rounded off by a recently completely overhauled Smart Connect app, which allows individual adjustments. This also includes sound profiles that can be created with a simple listening test. The touch control, which can be used to regulate everything without opening the app, is also very good. And if you want, you can specify for each gesture individually on which side it triggers which functions.
The endurance of the earphones is also excellent at up to 9 hours, the charging box offers reserves for up to 18 more hours of music enjoyment. After around 1.5 hours in the case, the empty earphones are fully charged again, 15 minutes are enough for an hour of music enjoyment.
All in all, the Sennheiser Sport True Wireless for 130 euros offer great value for money that not only athletes will find attractive. Because a comfortable but secure fit is just as important as an excellent sound and great endurance in everyday life.
