The 76-year-old Ecuadorian woman who revived at her own wake has died after spending seven days in intensive care after a first erroneous diagnosis of death being investigated by the health authorities in Ecuador.
Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman’s son, confirmed her death Saturday to The Associated Press. The case drew attention inside and outside the Andean country. Barbera Montoya said that the doctors at the state hospital where his mother was hospitalized had warned him that she “had no remedy.” And he passed away on Friday.
The Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement that the elderly Bella Montoya has died from an ischemic stroke. The entity assured that Montoya remained under “permanent surveillance”, but did not provide any results regarding the medical audit being carried out on the case.
The surprising event occurred a week ago in Babahoyo, some 208 kilometers southwest of Quito, when it was reported that the woman who was being watched over by her family and friends woke up after spending five hours in the coffin.
Her relatives became aware of the event when they heard that the woman was hitting the coffin and as they approached they saw that she was breathing with difficulty, after which she was taken to the hospital. Barbera Montoya told the AP that she has not received any report from the authorities on the medical audit of what happened and warned that “this is not going to stay like this.” She added that a sister of the deceased had already formally denounced her in search of “pointing out the doctor who… gave her up for dead.”
Now, the deceased – who was a retired nurse – is having a wake again in the same place where the event was recorded, but there is a problem: her son Barbera Montoya, 45, assured that he does not have the resources to pay for a vault where the remains of his mother rest, for which he expects support from the authorities.
