NEW ORLEANS — Authorities said that the U.S. Coast Guard is looking for a passenger on a cruise ship who jumped from her balcony onto the ocean and went missing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Coast Guard officials stated Thursday that an aircraft is performing search patterns off the coast.
Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard was notified by a woman, 32, who had fallen from Carnival Valor’s cruise ship. She was about 150 miles away from Southwest Pass, Louisiana.
According to Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for South Florida’s Carnival Cruise Line, the woman leapt into the ocean while the ship was at sea.
“The ship’s command immediately initiated search and rescue procedures. They returned to the scene of the incident and notified U.S. Coast Guard. Carnival’s CARE team was there to support the husband of the guest, Lupoli stated in a Wednesday statement.
He said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest’s family.”
According to the website, Carnival Valor can hold nearly 3,000 people and 1,180 crew members. Lupoli stated that the ship arrived in New Orleans on Thursday morning following a five-day cruise through Mexico.
