The Ballet de San Francisco (SF Ballet) has announced on Tuesday the appointment of the dancer and Spanish Choreographer Tamara Red as artistic director, becoming the first woman who will direct the company.

This has been collected by the San Francisco ballet in a statement in which they have pointed out that this incorporation has balanced an “innovative approach and contemporary choreographies” thanks to its “deep dedication to the classic ballet”.

Tamara red, which until now has directed the English National Ballet for nine and a half years, will join SF Ballet at the end of this year 2022, as explained, at the same time they have expressed that red will contribute “excellence and innovation” in the
which is the oldest dance company in the United States.

In this sense, the appointment will replace the one who has been ballet director for 37 years, Helgi Tomasson.
The decision, taken after a search of ten months, has been resolved by a committee chaired by the members of the Board of Directors, together with staff members, the dancers and the company’s musicians.

“For a long time I admired San Francisco Ballet as one of the most creative dance companies in the United States, which offers so many different artistic voices the opportunity to create works for some of the best dancers in the world,” the dancer said.

For its part, the Presidents of the Search Committee, Sunnie Evers and Fran Street, have been pronounced in this regard and have put into value the role of Red Tamara.
“The classic ballet is evolving from a very traditional past and, as a creative visionary, Tamara is the dynamic leader who will change that,” they said.
“She is the voice of the future and we are delighted that she is here at SF Ballet,” have added.

Likewise, from the SF Ballet they have recognized Red as a “famous leader” and remembered the awards he has received throughout his career as a main dancer and for his artistic excellence, as the Oliver Award for outstanding achievement in Dance 2017.
Likewise, they have highlighted their innovative program with collection-related classics such as Raymond and Giselle.

Tamara Red will move to San Francisco from the hand of her husband and also dancer, Isaac Hernández, who has been appointed main dancer of the San Francisco Ballet recently.
