The Cyprus authorities have reported the detection of up to 25 cases of infection with a combined version of the Delta and ÓMicron SARS-COV-2 variants that have called ‘Deltacron’.
“There are currently coinfections of omicron and delta. We have found a variant that is a combination of both,” explained the professor of biology of the University of Cyprus and director of the Biotechnology Laboratory and Molecular Virology, Leondios Kostrikis.Kostrikis has explained in statements
To the Signa TV chain that the new variant has the genetic signature of the omicron variant and the genomes of the Delta variant, according to the Bloomberg news agency.
So far Kostrikis and his team have identified 25 cases of ‘Deltacron’ and highlighted that are more frequent in patients hospitalized by Covid-19 than in non-hospitalized positives.
On January 7, samples were sent from the 25 patients detected to the Gisaid International Database of the Pasteur Institute, responsible for publishing the official sequencing of the new variants of influenza and the Coronavirus.
“We will see in the future if this variant is more pathological or contagious or if it will be imposed” at Delta and ÓMicron, it has indicated, although according to your opinion you will most likely be eclipsed by the omicron variant because it is more contagious.
