VATICAN CITY, – Pope Francis praised young people’s efforts to save the Earth’s environment on Sunday and encouraged them to be the critical conscience of society.
Francis celebrated Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica with hundreds of young faithful to mark a day in the church that focuses on youth in dioceses around the world.
“You have been given an exciting, but also challenging task,” the pontiff stated, “to stand tall when everything around you seems to be falling apart.”
Francis expressed gratitude for “all those times when your dream of fraternity, work towards healing the wounds of God’s creation, fight for respect for the dignity and share the spirit of solidarity, sharing, and cooperation”
He pointed out that environmental pollution is a topic of concern for many young people.
Francis stated, “We need it.”
According to the pontiff, dreaming is possible even in a world where “everything is about present gain,” which tends to suppress grand ideas.
Francis exhorted young people to be free and authentic, as well as being the critical conscience of society.
His papacy was a strong advocate for social justice and the protection of the environment.
The pope will meet with young people around the globe at the Catholic church jamboree in Lisbon (Portugal) in August 2023.
