The EarthShot Awards sponsored by Prince William in the United Kingdom recognized five innovative projects on Sunday against climate change from different parts of the world, including the tasks of reforestation of Costa Rica.
The second in the succession line to the British throne was present, together with his wife Catherine Middleton, in the Debut Gala of the Awards, created by its Royal Foundation, which was held at the Alexandra Palace of London with the presence of numerous personalities
and live performances of musicians like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.
Everything in the ceremony tried to be respectful of the environment: no plastic was used, nobody traveled by plane and the band of Chris Martin – which had the participation of South Koreans BTS – generated its electricity with the pedaling of sixty cyclists.
The prizes, which aspire to “inject optimism” into the debate on the fight against global warming by recognizing creative and extraplable ideas, will be granted until 2030 in ceremonies in different cities.
The next destination will be the United States, as a prince itself revealed.
The five winners announced today, elected between fifteen finalists distributed in five categories – of an initial list of more than 750 candidates nominated by some 200 specialized organizations – received one million pounds (1.18 million euros, 1.37 million dollars
) Each one and will have logistical support to take their initiatives forward.
The Government of Costa Rica won in the category of protecting and restoring nature by its environmental services payments program, by which the country provides economic recognition for land owners who decide to undertake environmental projects or protect the forest within their properties.
Costa Rica competed in this section, presented at La Gala by the Duchess of Cambridge, with the Pole Pole Foundation of the Congo and the Swiss Restoring Project.
In the Revivir the Oceans category obtained the award, introduced by the Liverpool Mo Salah footballer, the Coral Vita, Bahamas coral regeneration initiative, which was imposed on Pristine Seas, from the United States, and the Australian Living Seawalls.
In the Repair Climate section he triumphed the AEM electrolyzer created by Vaiéa Cowan, in front of the Nigerian company Reeddi of clean electricity and Solbazaar, from Bangladesh.
The Takachar de India project, which converts agricultural residues into biofuel, won to clean air, by beating the China Blue Map application and the 15-year-old woman of 15 years Vinisha Umarashankar, who has invented a cart that offers ironing service for the
Streets operated by solar energy, instead of usual coal.
The Italian city of Milan was awarded in the category Create a world without waste, presented by actress Emma Thompson, for its management system and redistribution of food surplus.
The other two nominees were Kenya and Wota Box Sanergy from Japan.
In a pre-recorded video for the event, Guillermo warned that we live in a key moment for the history of humanity and what we decide to “do or not do in the next ten years will determine the destiny of the planet for thousands.”
“Many of the answers have already … but we need everyone, from all over the society, to increase ambition and join us to repair” Earth, said the prince.
