Many migrants from Latin America tried to reach the United States on foot Monday, June 5, from the Mexican city of Matamoros (northeast) after the destruction of their camp located at the border by bad weather, according to media premises.
In videos posted on social media, the migrants can be seen rushing in groups across a narrow covered bridge leading to the border town of Brownsville, Texas. Some were accompanied by young children.
This is the first border incident of such magnitude since the expiration of the so-called “Title 42” measure on May 11. This measure, taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowed the American authorities to immediately deport visa-free migrants in the name of the health emergency. It has been replaced by a new system with restrictions on the right to asylum.
Darly Mercado, a migrant from Venezuela with her family, explained to journalists present on the spot that she had come up against American border guards with shields. “My husband asked them if they didn’t have wives, if they didn’t have children, but the guards said no and pushed us away,” she said.
Arrivals to the border of undocumented foreigners, mostly Venezuelans, had resumed before May, but they have decreased in recent weeks, according to the authorities. Thousands of migrants are stuck at the Mexican border hoping to get an appointment with US immigration to enter the United States.
