The ninth installment of “Fast & Furious”, starring regulars Vin Diesel, and Michelle Rodriguez, was released only in theaters. It had the largest release of any movie since the outbreak of coronavirus.
Universal Pictures’ F9 domestic total surpassed the $48.4 Million for ” a Quiet Place Part 2″ four weeks ago. It was the largest opening of any film since December 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
Jim Orr, Universal’s head of distribution, stated that “we couldn’t be happier to see that audience embraced the Fast’ family and came out in tremendous numbers to see F9”. “The domestic box office has been reenergized by the debut of F9 this weekend, and it will continue on its incredible path throughout the year.”
“A Quiet Place Part II”, which earned $6.2 million, came in second. It has earned $136.4million since its release. The third spot, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard”, brought in $4.88million.
The release of ” F9″, which was delayed multiple times, appears to have arrived on the right weekend in North America. The film seemed appropriate for the moment in industry, as young audiences were eager to see a movie that emphasizes an immersive, loud and action-packed experience.
Paul Dergarabedian is a senior media analyst at Comscore. “It’s the perfect combination of growing consumer confidence, vaccinations in North America and movies that have been released creating momentum,” he said. “I can’t imagine a better situation for the industry. There are a few bumps along the way. “Furious 9” was the first summer blockbuster for two years.
“F9” was launched internationally on May 19th and has since grossed over $400 million worldwide.
Universal avoided the hybrid approach of combining streaming and theatrical releases, like Disney did with “Cruella” earlier in the year and Warner Bros. with “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
This was also after major theater chains had significantly relaxed restrictions on masking and capacity.
According to the trends, Hollywood may have something that looks a lot like a regular summer movie-season. However, it will start months later than usual and won’t set any industry records.
In the next weeks, Marvel and Disney’s “Black Widow” will be released. Warner Bros.’s “The Suicide Squad” will also be released. Studios use a variety hybrid release plans. While movies are now spending more time streaming and in theaters, it is likely that this will continue, there is a growing emphasis on the big screen.
It’s a delayed start for a summer that has been long overdue. Late June being ostensibly the beginning of summer is unusual. But it’s better late than never,” Dergarabedian stated. “A huge Fourth of July weekend is approaching, with nearly every genre represented. And a week later, we have ‘Black Widow’, so we are on the road to recovery.”
