The French distributor of furniture Cafom announced on Wednesday to be entered “into exclusive negotiations” with a contractor-investor Thierry The Guénic to give him his sign iconic Habitat Design International, in financial difficulty for years. “The takeover offer for Thierry The Guénic will be the subject of a procedure of information-consultation of employee representative bodies prior to any commitment of Cafom,” said the group in a press release.

In October 2019, Cafom had announced his intention to quickly divest its subsidiary, struggling for years in a market that is middle of the range to the sentence, despite several plans of reorganization. “This decision is part of a desire to refocus the group on the operations of franchises in overseas (Aim, Darty and Habitat to this day) and e-commerce sites (Vente-unique.com and DirectLowCost.com),” insisted Cafom Wednesday.

26 stores in France

The group intends to sell 100% of the share capital of Habitat Design International and its subsidiaries. Habitat currently operates 34 stores in own (including 26 in France, one in Monaco, five in Spain and two in Switzerland), as well as three sites in the online sale and a thirty franchise stores around the world.

Habitat had suffered for his 2018-2019 fiscal year, ended in September, a net loss of € 25.8 million, affected in part by non-recurring items, for an annual turnover of around 100 million euros.

The potential buyer, Thierry The Guénic, was recently honoured for having –in the company of the entrepreneur Stéphane Collaert and the Investment Company Grimonprez– redeemed to the distribution group Vivarte its 230 stores shoes San Marina, as well as its subsidiary, SMC Services, an acquisition announced in early February.

Thierry Guénic and Stéphane Collaert had already returned to Vivarte clothing Chevignon and the 75 stores of shoes Cosmoparis. At the end of September 2019, Cafom had 24 stores overseas under the brands Purpose, Darty, Habitat, First Deco, and Music and Sound.
