In his complaint filed against the Roanne detention center, consulted by AFP, the complainant, Farès Gana, considers that “guards are responsible for the murder of [his] brother [Eddy]”.

Farès Gana believes “that we wanted to make his brother, who was “anti-suicide”, pay for escaping in May 2012 from this prison, arguing that he had already “overcome” seventeen years of detention. Eddy Gana had escaped by trickery, by lining up with the visitors at the end of a visiting room; according to him, his escape had been “followed by sanctions among the staff”.

The Roanne public prosecutor’s office told AFP that the complaint would be “joined to the ongoing investigation into the causes of death”.

Convictions in 2001 and 2020

“On the night of February 3 to 4, he announced at 10:05 p.m. over the intercom of his cell that he was ending his life,” said the regional directorate of prison administration (DRAP), adding that ‘an “adapted treatment procedure [had] been initiated in the minutes that followed”.

On their arrival, supervisors gave him a cardiac massage which helped restart his heart, specifies the DRAP.

Eddy Gana was to be released in November 2024. He did not benefit from any particular monitoring because he was not declared suicidal, according to union sources and the management of the prison administration. He had been placed in solitary confinement following a fight with another inmate.

According to the daily La Montagne, Eddy Gana was first convicted in 2001 in connection with a drug trafficking case. He was convicted again in November 2020 for similar offenses.
