CARMEN POSADAS. Montevideo, 1953.Writer, journalist, fan of Peñarol and Club Atlético de Madrid. His new novel, The master of puppets (Planet), is a history of Spain over 50 years through its ‘nice people’.
tell me about your book, go ahead.I think this is my best novel but that may not mean anything. And I know that it is risky because in Spain, unlike in England, there is no custom of writing about the upper classes. Who has written about the upper classes in Spain, which does not occur to me? Little people and from the point of view cartoony. Terenci did, Mendoza also. And I think were a little unfair with their characters.I wanted to do a portrait with a part of humor but not only done with humor. People think that if you write about an environment frivolous you can only make novels frivolous. It’s not. Where is Proust, then? And What About Capote? As I read it more as the novel a Spanish that not only is Spanish write to clarified about Spain. That was the idea. Who best portrays a society is the outsider. And I have spent all my life here, but my gaze was for many years an outsider. Still, it will be sometimes, right? That feeling of “what happens to these people”.I can think of with hours. Take Me out to dinner at ten and a half and I think as Asterix: “they Are crazy these hispanic”.A late dinner will be a folly but it is also a sign of joy of living. But it’s not fair. It seems that for dinner at half past eight I’m a boring. There is another novel, ‘Nothing that you don’t know’, Mary, Tena, which is the opposite: Montevideo counted by a Spanish in the 60’s.Mary is a friend. The conclusion is that the bourgeoisie in montevideo was more refined and much more prone to adultery than the madrid. At a glance, the Spanish society was calm but only to the naked eye. If they kept the ways, people could do what he pleased, including having lovers. And what about in Montevideo? The same. Good: it was a country more advanced. There is a law of divorce very early and very feminist… But we are years of crisis and the country has become more provincial. Then, his Spanish friends from adolescence seemed a little carcass, right? The relations were further coded: I Was very defined from what point could they do handyman, when you passed the hand on the shoulder when the kiss… But I fell in the British Institute, which was a school very unconventional and where there were people of coats very different. The first guy that I broke his heart gave out leaflets against the referendum of Franco in 1966. So I started handing out leaflets for a love with 13 years ago. How was it? How did it work? Was held the referendum and he lost all interest for me. And still I’ve been beaten, you see. That’s why I never became a communist. No, I was never a communist because my father was ambassador in Moscow and I knew first hand what was the USSR. What is the life in the embassy?Surrounded by microphones. So many microphones were sometimes matched and could be heard yelling at the spies, with their dramas russians. And when they came to Spain by the exiles of the uruguayan dictatorship… Onetti, for example. Did you have any relationship with that world? At the beginning of the dictatorship, my father is in Moscow. And I was here… but I regret to say that in 1973 I didn’t even know who he was Onetti. The women of this novel are strong, do not see themselves as victims of their world.Because I hate victimhood. Clear that there is a lot to claim, but I know that what has gone wrong in my life is my fault. I wish it were one of those people that blames their problems to the world. Should be very simple to live that way.
