A new environmental movement calls direct action against environmental destruction
More than 50 protesters have been arrested in the first week of direct action
The UN warns that biodiversity loss can lead to human extinction
it was Not the typical protest in Downing Street. The group Extinction Rebellion has re-invented itself in the last week the environmental activism with a series of strong street protests, using glue to hold on to the railings, the doors and walls of Government buildings to denounce the lack of action before the ecological crisis.
More than 50 protesters have been arrested in the first week of direct action, before the mansion officer of the First Minister, to the Ministry of Environment and to the Department of Commerce. Despite the warning launched to the police -“I’m stuck, don’t try to move me”- the members of Extinction Rebellion could not avoid the passage through the dungeon.
“The changes occur when people are committed to committing acts of civil disobedience,” said the confundadora the group, Grail Bradbook, mother of two children and professor of Molecular Biophysics. “As a scientist I know all that is at stake: we have just 10 years to curb the ecological destruction and to avoid a climate change uncontrollable.”
“The science leads us, warning from 30 years ago: we are taking the planet to a destructive downward spiral”, warns Bradbook in a statement to Truthout. “Despite all the alarms, the politicians are still without act and without change this economic system that is killing us. We cannot continue to be obedient if the social contract has been broken”.
Extinction Rebellion was born as an extension of the group Rising Up!, emerged from the winds of the Occupy movement in London. The group’s mission is to force the Government to admit the urgency of climate change and the threat of ecological destruction, and set the goal of zero emissions by 2015 and a reduction of the consumption patterns.
The sixth great extinction
this Is the first group that builds a bridge between the climate change and loss of biodiversity. The launch has coincided, nothing happened, with the latest Living Planet report from the organization WWF, which has given the voice of warning before the sixth great extinction and the collapse of the 60% of the population of vertebrate animals in the last half-century.
The UN held these days in Egypt, a preparatory meeting of the summit of the biodiversity to be held in 2020 in Beijing. Pasca Palmer, executive director of the Convention, the UN biodiversity, has taken advantage of the occasion to launch the alarm and warned that the current process of ecological destruction can lead to “the extinction of human life”.
The green campaigner and YouTuber british, Jack Harries has made an appeal to his 4 million followers to support the actions of Extinction Rebellion. Harries is joined to the first protests in London: “Our future is at stake. Young people should be outraged and calling for an urgent change to our governments. It is not enough to change the bulbs, there is an additional step… climate change is an existential threat”.
“we Cannot tolerate the destruction of our beautiful planet”, can be read in the manifesto of Exctinction Rebellion. “We have to tell the truth: we’re moving toward extinction. Up to this point we have arrived after acitvismo and protests. We cannot continue shouting in the dark. To stop us will have to get into the prison.”
