Maria B. is suspected of having planned, on orders of a high-ranking Russian government employee, to subvert American political organizations. According to prosecutors, US has already imposed sanctions on employee. His name was not published.
According to Ministry of Justice, Maria B. had been detained with a student visa in United States. From 2015 to at least 2017, she tried to build relationships with American people and infiltrate organizations that would influence American politics. It was said to have acted in interest of Russian government. According to Guardian, Maria B. is an activist in arms lobby, and she has connections to National Rifle Association.
