What may be the most expensive house ever sold in Northbrook changed hands Feb. 17, records show.
A house in the 1800 block of Braeside Lane sold that day for $4.325 million, according to a listing by the selling agency, Coldwell Banker.
The listing described the house as having 16,671 square feet on a 2.5-acre parcel, with six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and a five-car garage.
"Our MLS (multiple listing service) goes back to 1980, and there’s nothing at this price point ever sold. The only one close is (former Bears quarterback) Jim McMahon’s, at $4.25 million, said Carol DeGrazia Santi, one of the seller’s agents. McMahon’s house sold three years ago.
DeGrazia Santi wouldn’t comment further about the sale, saying just that "the sellers and buyers are very private people."
The buyers’ agent could not be reached for comment.
Tax records indicate that the seller was Christine Schwartz, a philanthropist, nursing educator and art collector, who has been especially interested in Chicago-area painters.
The land for the house was purchased in 1994, according to the Cook County recorder of deeds, by Ted Schwartz, founder of APAC Customer Service Co., a big Bannockburn-based call-center company, and now a principal owner of Schwartz Capital Group, a Chicago investment firm. Permits were pulled for construction in 1997 and 1998.
Northbrook Symphony takes on nations’ anthems, ballads Dorothy Andries
Nations meet on battlefields, or preferably the United Nations. They meet at interfaith conclaves and international conferences. But actually they might meet most often in concert halls where the masterpieces of their composers vie for pride of place with their musical counterparts around the globe.

Among the three-story, 18-room home’s other listed amenities are an 11-seat movie theater, a fitness center, heated garage and heated marble underfoot throughout the main floor. There are six fireplaces and four staircases, plus an elevator.
The house is in the toniest area of east Northbrook, a short distance south of Voltz Road. It’s three times the size of most of the biggest houses in the area. Its annual property tax bill is about $60,000, about $5,000 less than the median income of Northbrook residents ages 25 to 44, according to U.S. Census figures.
According to Coldwell Banker, the house was listed at $5.89 million in April, 2016, then was reduced to $4.99 million five months later, and $4.6 million after another two months.
