Trevell Timmons figures Lockport aced a couple of subjects this season.
Chemistry, for one, with a senior class that made up half the Porters’ 14-man lineup for Saturday night’s Class 3A state championship match against Montini at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
"We knew from the start our senior year was going to be the year it’d be hard to touch us," Timmons said after adding a team state title to the individual championship he won a week earlier.
After spotting Montini a 7-0 lead, Lockport roared back with six straight wins — three by pin — en route to a 33-20 victory that capped an unbeaten season with the program’s first state title.
Downstate Washington defended its 2A title, beating Wauconda 58-12, and Lena-Winslow/Stockton defeated Wilmington 40-36 in the 1A final.
"It’s going to be a history class for Lockport," said Timmons, who started the decisive run with a 7-4 decision at 160 pounds. "We’re creating history every year."
That started four years ago, when most of the current seniors won a grade-school state title for Homer Junior High.
Timmons was on that team, along with Payton Fernandes and Brendan Ramsey, among others. Fernandes, nicknamed "Pin Fall Payton" by Porters coach Josh Oster, started the run of falls with a 1:45 pin at 195.
"I felt like all three of those pins sealed it," Fernandes said. "I wasn’t expecting us to win by more than 10 points like that."
Yousif Salah (220) and Ronald Tucker (285) followed with falls to put Lockport (29-0) up 27-7 and Montini (22-3) never recovered.
Ramsey clinched the victory with a 14-7 decision at 126 that made it 30-17 with two bouts left.
"He missed some time with an injury, came back and had a rough Cheesehead (Tournament)," Oster said. "His record (26-21) is nowhere near indicative of how good he is."
"It was really good to redeem myself," said Ramsey, who went 0-2 at the individual state tournament.
Lockport also had decisions from seniors Nick Dado (170), Chandler Proszek (182) and Brandon Ramos (138).
"We knew coming in that this (senior) group could win something depending on how it all shook out," Oster said. "And it shook right."
