Too bad for the planet. The sale of private jets is not faltering in 2023, on the contrary: it continues to increase. Similarly, the number of private flights has never been higher than in 2022, according to a study by the think tank Institute for policy studies, spotted by The Guardian. The think tank counted 5.3 million private flights worldwide last year.
The world fleet has more than doubled in 20 years. And this year 2023 should not be the year of the reversal of the trend: sales of used and new private jets should go up to 34.6 billion dollars (31.6 billion euros). That’s more than two billion more than last year ($34.1 billion).
An increase that comes as global warming worries more and more, and that, particularly in France, private jets are rightly singled out. The Minister of Transport said he was in favor of an increase in the taxation of private planes, but against the ban, which was proposed a few months ago by Europe Écologie-Les Verts. A proposal from environmentalists that appeals to more and more French people. In the meantime, the fuel for these jets is completely tax free in France. A group of millionaires, the Patriotic Millionaires, of Americans, asks to be taxed more and recommends taxing 10% on purchases of used private jets and 5% on new ones.
In the finance law for 2023, a “70% increase in the private aviation fuel tax” was introduced. Clément Beaune also proposed an increase in the “ecocontribution” in 2024.
