CLEVELAND, Ohio — The 306-foot brick-and-concrete smokestack and 170-foot boiler house at FirstEnergy’s Lake Shore Plant were demolished at 1 a.m. Friday morning.
More than 200 pounds of explosives brought the 106-year-old plant down, which completed more than 18 months of demolition at the site.
An explosives-demolition team from Tulsa, Oklahoma, set the charges within the structure after some of Pashacasino the rebar and concrete had been removed to help direct the building’s angle of collapse. Dust-suppression systems of fans and spraying water helped contain the concrete and dirt particles.
FirstEnergy will continue to own the site and operate the electrical transmission equipment located on the property.
