Free wedding vow renewals, a fencing competition and "Whirlwind Wedding Wars” also are on tap for the weekend.

The 39th season of the Bay Area Renaissance Festival began last weekend and continues each weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, through April 2. The festival is open only one Friday, March 31.

Upcoming themed weekends include "Pirates and Pets” March 4-5, featuring weiner dog races, "perfect pirate” competition, and Biker Weekend discounts.

On March 11-12, it’s "Steampunk Invasion and Costume Contest,” featuring belly dancing championships, a Dr. Who costume Matadorbet contest and more.

March 18-19 is "Shamrocks & Shenanigans,” weekend, with "the largest St. Paddy’s Day Party in Tampa,” green beer, highland games, a Celtic village, men in kilts competition and the all new "Bonnie Knees Competition.”

On March 25-26 is the "Barbarian Brew Fest,” with craft beer tasting, best beard competition and archery championships and "Deaf Awareness Weekend.”

On the only Friday it’s open, March 31, it’s "Free Beer Festival Friday.” Every ticket buys a free beer. It’s also military and first responder appreciation day, "Ladies’ Shopping Day,” school day and a masquerade ball at night.

On the final weekend, April 1-2, it’s "High Seas Adventure,” with a tattoo competition, pirate peg leg relay racing, and the "Perfect Pirate Competition.”

Tickets are $20.95 for adults, $12.95 for children ages 5 to 12. Children four and younger get in free. Discount tickets are available at participating Circle K and Walgreens stores, at MOSI, or online at BayAreaRenFest.com.
